With its sharp lines, its distinct colors, and its pristine, perfect
models shaved and oiled into almost manikin-like perfection, Essex
is a stunning new pictorial from Voronin that takes “erotic
noir” to a whole new level. You can feel the Cold War spy
energy coming from its large shiny scans, as if this were a piece
of Russian propaganda disguised as a tourist brochure urging us
all to get on a plane and head to the Mother Country!
While “noir” has many elements, its main gist is mystery
and suspense. Often in a noir film you have a dirty urban setting,
poor lighting, and evil characters battled by a dashing hero with
a beautiful romantic interest. There’s lots of gunplay and
intrigue.
The “noir” we’re looking at in Essex is more of
the Hitchcock variety. The lines are sleek. The women are beautiful.
The colors are evocative, and they pull you into a world you might
not actually be able to inhabit. There is also intense suspense
going on inside each composition. The relationships remain unclear,
even as they arouse great interest.
What’s also compelling about this photo series is the fear
it incites. The models are clearly some of the finest quality talent
on the planet when it comes to nude portraiture, and in that sense
they are welcoming, enticing, and pleasing to all the senses. However,
they are SO beautiful and SO powerful looking, one gets a sense
that making love with them could be dangerous or even lethal. They’re
the kind of girls about whom one says, “She could kill a man,”
though “killing” in this instance is usually a good
thing, implying a real daring and provocative romp that takes you
to new heights of ecstasy. Still, the danger lingers, and it is
insidiously tempting, adding to the thrill.
Voronin is the master at such series as we have before us in Essex.
His camera is so sharp and his vision so specific, you can’t
help but let your eye be taken into the carnival of often shrill
and compelling techniques. Fortunate for us, as well, he consistently
gets some of the finest models on Met-Art to pose for his lens.
They are usually long-limbed, tan, and supermodel-looking. And this
series is no different. Hot models in a hot world – that is
erotic noir.
