Saffica – The Movie

Sappho was a Greek lyrics poet who lived on the Isle of Lesbos. She was friends with the poet, Alcaeus, and the leader of a female literary circle at Mytilene. Her poems are laced with imagery of love and sensuality. Today, Lesbians take her as their “poet laureate” in honor of her sexual openness and daring.

The movie from which you see images here is a pure Sapphic delight. Two gorgeous young women make love on a fur in front of glowing orange lights. Their passion is genuine, their love as deep as that of their patroness poet. In honor of their sensuality, we give you three poems by Sappho. We recommend reading them, and then downloading the movie, for the ultimate Sapphic experience.

Happy bridegroom, thou art blest
With blisses far beyond the rest,
For thou hast won
The chosen one,
The girl thou lovest best.

Translated by Frederick Tennyson

I have a child, a lovely one,
In beauty like the golden sun,
Or like sweet flowers of earliest bloom;
And Claïs is her name, for whom
I Lydia's treasures, were they mine,
Would glad resign.

Translated by J. H. Merivale

Come to me from Crete, to this
holy shrine, graced by your apple grove
and altars fragrant
with smoking incense.

Cool water bubbles beneath the branches
of apple-trees, and roses shade the whole place;
from the shimmering leaves flows
the breath of sweet sleep.

There too the horses' meadow is rich
with the flowers of spring,
and the breezes softly blow...

There Cypris, take...
and into golden cups gently pour
libation of nectar, mixed
for our celebration.

Translated by A. Maingon
