Who is she? Where does she come from? What does she like to do? How does she spend her day? Has she ever been in love?
When one looks at a series by Anais Demois, questions such as these swirl thru the mind. Especially with a series as stunningly intimate and captivating as Vellum. In this instance, however, answers are not so easy to come by, for the model in Vellum cultivates an air of mystery around her life as confidently as she emits an air of sensuality and innocence in her images.
There are some things that Demois knows through her model release. Her name is Adele, she is 19, and she lives in a village outside Moscow, Russia.
Other than that, there is little more than the kind of conjecture a fascinated artist can glean from an enchanting, yet secretive, young woman.
When Adele comes into the studio, she often brings several girlfriends with her. Often, their faces are painted with exotic, almost gothic, patterns. Leaves and vines are in their hair. They wear flowing white translucent robes. Adele introduces them as her sisters and says they live together in the woods. She also says they sleep together, though she doesn't say what that means.
While Demois is shooting Adele, he takes the opportunity to ask
her about her life. She says that she was born in the same village
in which she lives, that her father is a farmer and her mother is
a healer. She says that her house is a very free place - boys come
and go and sleep with her sisters. Her parents are free-thinkers
and naturists, meaning they practice nudity year-round. Adele says
she was introduced to her sexuality through her sisters.
Demois often sees Adele in the town near where she lives. She takes part in May Day festivals, can often be seen dancing with her sisters in the town square, and hangs out in a café on the main street. There she spends her time drawing and reading large, hardcover books that look ancient and mysterious. She always has an impish smile on her face.
When asked if she is in love, Adele waits a moment, smiles and says
"Of course I am in love - with everything." She says that her favorite
place to make love is by the lake near her house. She also loves
to use oils and foods when making love. In short, this is a very
